Class Description

Oil Painting 102 is the class that builds upon the foundations learned in Oil Painting 101. If you have had some experience and want to deepen your understanding of the different aspects of oil painting, this is your class. The purpose of OP-102 is to gain command of your vision and materials so that they work together to enable you to create wonderful art. As in OP-101, we will cover materials and procedures, value and color, practice and philosophy of oil painting, drawing from knowledge that has been handed down to us by the masters. During the class, there will be demonstrations as well as painting time, with personal instruction and critique, designed to bring you from your present level to the next level.

There is a small supply list, as members will create satisfying work using only seven colors and white. This will give us deep understanding of the language of color, value, and temperature that has been spoken fluently by only the masters. They didn’t know anything that we can’t learn.

The Instructor

My qualifications for teaching adults include many years as a Master Training Specialist teaching courses in Navy Intelligence to senior officers of all branches of the military, for which I was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal;  many years teaching various Bible studies;  and, most recently, teaching multi-media and oil painting.

My formal education in oil painting comes from the Glassell School of Art, as well as from workshops with master painters David Leffel, Everett Raymond Kinstler, Quang Ho, Qiang Huang, Jeremy Lipking, Scott Burdick, Sue Lyon, Clayton Beck, Carolyn Anderson and Kathryn Stats.

I have also extensively studied the physics of light, color theory, techniques of the great masters, and art history;  have written for American Artist magazine;  write a blog called Paint Your Joy;  had paintings in Southwest Art Magazine, Fine Art Connoisseur, American Art Collector;  and won awards in several international shows, including the Merit Award for Portrait given by Daniel Greene at the Salon International.
